Graduate Admission

The Department offers programs leading to the MSc and PhD degrees. Admission and degree requirements for the MSc and PhD programs are described below. Students should also read the School of Graduate Studies' regulations in the Graduate Calendar. These regulations are a minimum only. Admission to the Department is competitive and usually requires higher standards.

Application Deadline

  • The deadline for applications for September admission to our full-time MSc and PhD programs is January 15.
  • The deadline for applications for January admission to our part-time MSc program is October 1.

Note: There is no January admission to our full-time Master's program. Ph.D. students are only accepted for January admission in exceptional circumstances.

Late applications may be accepted, at the discretion of the department, but applicants are advised that there may not be any full-time places remaining for applications received after the deadline.

Students admitted to the full-time Master's program or to the Ph.D. program receive funding from the University and the Department for their studies. Applicants for the part-time Master's are not considered for financial assistance.

Non-Degree (Special) Students

A student who seeks to take individual courses, but who is not registered for a degree, may apply to register as a non-degree/special student, either on a part-time or full-time basis. Such applications will be considered provided students have an undergraduate degree and provided they plan to take at least one graduate level course in the Department. Special student status is useful for students wishing to upgrade their background for admission to the M.Sc. or Ph.D. programs. Please note: Courses taken as a special student may not subsequently be counted towards a degree program.

English Facility Requirement

All international students, whose primary language is not English and who graduated from a university where the language of instruction and examination was not English, are required to demonstrate facility in the English language. This requirement is a condition of admission. It should be met before an acceptance into a graduate program is issued. Acceptable tests and required scores are listed here.
